How to Make Name Tags to Color

  1. 1

Type a name or a class list

One name fills all 8 tags on the sheet. A class list of up to 40 names gives one tag per child, in order.

  2. 2

    Pick a letter style

Bubble, Block, Script, Comic, Soft or Retro, the same six styles as the name generator. Then pick US Letter or A4 paper.

  3. 3

    Print, color and cut

Print the sheets or download them as a PDF. Kids color their own name, then cut along the dashed lines.

Name Tags for School, Parties and the Classroom

These tags start as outlines, not finished labels, so each child makes their tag their own with crayons, markers or colored pencils.

Back to school

Print a tag for every child before the first day. Coloring their own name is a calm first activity, and the finished tag helps you learn the names in the first week.

Classroom seating

Tape a tag to each desk or table spot to show where everyone sits. Paste your class list once and you get the whole class on a few sheets, in the order you typed.

Parties and playdates

Make tags for every guest at a birthday party, a scout meeting or a library story time. Coloring the tags keeps early arrivals busy while everyone else gets there.

Printing and Cutting Tips

  • Print at actual size (100%), not "fit to page", so the dashed lines stay straight and every tag is the same size.
  • Card stock holds up better than printer paper for tags kids wear all day or tape to a desk.
  • A black-and-white printer is enough. The tags are black outlines only.
  • Color first, then cut. The sheet is easier to hold while kids color.
  • Cut along the dashed lines. The rounded frame sits inside each tag, so a cut that wanders a little still keeps the frame whole.
  • To wear a tag, use a safety pin or tape, or punch a hole and add a string or a lanyard.

Printable Name Tags FAQ

How do I make printable name tags?

Type a name, pick a letter style and a paper size, then press Download PDF or Print. You get one sheet with 8 name tags for that name.

Can I make name tags for a whole class?

Yes. Choose Class list and paste up to 40 names, one per line or split by commas. Each name gets one tag, in the order you typed, 8 to a sheet, so 40 names fill 5 sheets. Any name with characters other than the letters A–Z is listed so you can fix it before you download.

How big are the name tags?

Each tag is 3.75 × 2.5 inches on US Letter paper, and about 92 × 68 mm on A4, measured along the dashed cut lines. Every sheet is upright, with 2 columns and 4 rows.

Can kids color the name tags?

Yes. The name is drawn in hollow letters with a thick outline, so there is room to color inside every letter.

Which letter styles can I pick?

Bubble, Block, Script, Comic, Soft and Retro. Bubble, Block and Comic use capital letters. Script, Soft and Retro write the name with only the first letter in capitals.

How long can a name be?

Up to 12 letters. Use the letters A–Z only; spaces, hyphens, numbers and accented letters don't work. Longer names are drawn smaller so they fit inside the frame.

Can I print the tags on label or sticker sheets?

The tags aren't sized for any brand of label sheet. Print them on plain paper or card stock and cut along the dashed lines.

Is the name tag maker free, and do you store the names?

It is free to use, with no sign-up and no watermark. Your browser draws the tags and builds the PDF, so the names are not sent to our servers. You can print as many as you need at home, in a classroom or at a party, but you can't sell them.
