Name Tracing with Lines and Dotted Letters

Dashed letters

Short dashes along each stroke. The letter shape is easy to see, so this is a good first step.

Dotted letters

Dots instead of dashes, with more space to fill in. Children connect the dots to write each letter.

Dotted letters with start dots

A bigger dot marks where the pencil goes down for each stroke. Strokes start at the top, and round letters such as a and d start with the circle, as US schools teach.

Handwriting lines

Capitals reach from the baseline to the top line. Small letters such as a, m and o reach the dashed midline, and g, j, p, q and y drop below the baseline.

Name Tracing for Preschool & Kindergarten

Writing their own name is often the first word children learn to write. A few ways to use the worksheets:

  • Trace each letter with a finger first, then with a crayon or a thick pencil.
  • Start with dotted letters and start dots, then move to dashed letters, then to the plain lines.
  • Many preschools teach the name with a capital first letter and the rest lowercase. Pick Capitalized to match.
  • One or two rows a day is plenty. Color the name at the bottom when the rows are done.
  • Slip the worksheet into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker to practice again and again.

Name Tracing Worksheets FAQ

Are the name tracing worksheets free?

Yes. They are free to make, download and print, with no sign-up and no watermark. You can print as many as you need at home or in a classroom, but you can't sell them.

How do I print a name tracing worksheet?

Press Print to print the worksheet, or Download PDF to save it. Pick US Letter or A4 before you print, and print at actual size (100%) so the letters fit between the lines.

What age are name tracing worksheets for?

Most children start tracing their name in preschool, around ages 3 to 5, and keep practicing in kindergarten. Start with dotted letters and start dots for the youngest, and move to dashed letters as their hand gets steadier.

Can I make name tracing worksheets for a whole class at once?

Yes. Choose Class list and paste up to 40 names, one per line or split by commas. You get one PDF with a worksheet for each name, in the order you typed, all with the same settings. Any name with characters other than the letters A–Z is listed so you can fix it before you download.

Can I change the worksheet before I print it?

Yes. You can change the name, the kind of letters, the handwriting lines, the letter case, the number of rows, the name to color and the paper size. The PDF is a finished page, not a form you fill in, so make your changes before you download it.

How long can a name be?

Up to 12 letters. Use the letters A–Z only; spaces, hyphens, numbers and accented letters don't work. Longer names are drawn smaller so they fit on one row.

Do you store the name?

No. Your browser draws the worksheet and builds the PDF, so the name is not sent to our servers.
